tuned in: The September Issue
We first told you about The September Issue back in June when we first saw the trailer. It was a long 5 months until I finally got to see it and it was totally worth the wait! The September Issue goes behind the scenes at Vogue to follow the elusive Anna Wintour and her gang of fashion disciples and gives an amazing look into the publication that essentially controls the entire fashion industry. I was so interested to see how much power this tiny woman wields and left feeling not disgusted with this shrewd little lady but absolutely impressed. When you see the amount of pressure that is put on her shoulders you can start to appreciate her cool sensibilities. She not only gives direction to fashion powerhouses such as Jean Paul Gautier and Oscar de la Renta but she seeks out and helps develop new talents like Thakoon all the while running the biggest magazine on the planet and keeping it within the confines of the budget. I couldn’t help but think to myself over and over again as the movie went on ‘would Anna Wintour get so much flack if she was Adam Wintour? If she was a man? I think not. So many powerful men are applauded for their forthrightness, respected when they work long hours and admired when they are only satisfied with the best.
The most amazing part of this movie was watching the dance between the excruciatingly talented Grace Coddington (and Wintour. Both are so amazing at their jobs that they are like a match mate in heaven. They mutter about both pushing their weight, Coddington on her creatives and Wintour on her budgets and somehow after all of the back and forth they end up with an exquisite product, a deep respect for each other and a relationship unscathed.

p.s. my fave part is watching Andre Leon Talley’s attempt at playing tennis with a Louis Vuitton beach towel around his neck and a LV water cooler! I LOVE HIME!!! Hilarity!

I saw this a few weeks ago and LOVED IT!
I’ve never quite bought into the Anna Wintour = Devil storyline. I see it more as protecting her brand (and magazine brand) to the extreme. Sure Vogue has some interesting rules around wardrobe, and yes Anna is not the friendliest or warmest person but when you break it down if you work for Vogue you have to dress well in order to be an ambassador for the Vogue brand and it’s not in Anna’s best interest to be friends with everyone. The “woman in power as bitch” storyline gets so old, I think she just does what’s best for business.
I LOVED the relationship between Grace and Anna. They are so different (but also so the same in terms of the integrity of their work) but the dynamic works. I wished we had seen some more of certain Vogue staffers like ALT (his tennis scene was HILARITY), Hamish Bowles and even Meredity Melling Burke – but I also remember reading that they had a ridiculous amount of footage for this so a lot had to be cut.
Such a great movie and I agree it’s an interesting look at how a business (fashion or not) functions.

I loved this movie…seen it in NY in late August and I loved the interaction between her and her daughter. I also enjoyed the flashback of both Anna and Grace’s modelling careers.
