Tuesday Tip : Home Decor & Architectural Salvage

I have been obsessing lately with the shabby chic possibilities of salvaged materials such as wood pallets.  Not only is this a sustainable approach to furnishings, they add that unique eclectic, vintage vibe to your home. At IDS this past Sunday at the Trade Talks with Lynda Reeves + Marilyn Denis they shared my obsession of “Industrial Chic” citing it as one of this seasons trends in Interior Design. The following images were discovered on Home Designing.

Lynda Reeves’ of House&Home wrote up a round-up of stores that sell great reclaimed or used materials. Check out the following for authentic treasures like vintage doors, hardware, knobs and more, check out stores that specialize in salvaged materials from demolished homes and buildings. You can also search online using terms such as “architectural salvage” or “used building materials.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Habitat for Humanity ReStore (RE-Store) is a retail store concept that accepts donations of overstocked, seconds, used, discontinued items and salvageable building materials donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals. ReStore is like the Goodwill but for home renovation . Items can include new and gently used furniture, building materials, appliances, cabinetry, sinks, countertops, household and décor items. ReStore then sells those items to the public at a reduced cost, typically 50-80% percent off the original retail value. If you’re doing a renovation, and the things you are replacing are in good condition you can donate them to ReStore with the proceeds going directly to Habitat for Humanity. Everyone knows Habitat for Humanity is a great cause as they build houses for low income families using primarily volunteer labor. Habitat for Humanity Restore is worth a look before you make your way over to Home Depot, to see if you can get what you need on the cheap and help a needy family out at the same time. Or even if you’re doing renovation, give them a call to see if they want your old things.

Habitat for Humanity Toronto owns and operates four ReStore outlets in Toronto – Check them out here.

To Donate materials or inquire about the Habitat Toronto Restore: Call 416 755 7353 or Email: restore@torontohabitat.ca

Pavillion

If second hand furniture is not your sort of thing, there is a trendier alternative. Located at 739 Queen Street West, Pavillion is known as a destination for condo-dwellers. Their selection of furniture is tailored, with clean lines and rich wood finishes – perfect for those with small spaces that don’t have a square foot to spare. Amongst our Winy B expeditions we have made a stop at Pavillion, and we came across some beautiful pieces like dining room tables, coffee tables and end tables that are custom made in salvaged wood. Although Pavillion is on the pricier side, if this is your esthetic their quality of product is pretty much incomparable and I guarantee you will fall in love with at least one item in store.

Saturday Randomness: IDS General Admission, Olaf Hajek & Chalkboardin’. .

I have been in an IDS frenzy the past few days, the show so far is amazing. I had serious groupie fever yesterday listening in at the Trade Talks for architect Bjarke Ingels and designers Fabio Novembre and Matali Crasset. Their words were electric and they lit up the room when talking about their works. It was evident that this career path was not a choice but a passion for each of them.

If you didn’t catch my last post . .

General Admission starts today !

Saturday – January 28, 2012 – General Admission
Sunday – January 29, 2012 – General Admission

General Admission is $19 online + $22 onsite and can be purchased HERE – However for additional charges for Design Docs screening (+$15 or +$45 all day Saturday), and Panels in Conversation in Design (+$125) – Check out the schedule HERE

I will be walking around the show which takes place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building, located at 255 Front Street West – check out directions here – today and tomorrow afternoon toting the good ole SLR and media badge emblazoned with Coco&Lowe – So if you see me say hi!!!

Catch my tweets @faesavoirfaire  + remember to tweet your experience to @IDSToronto #IDS12 !!!

As per usual this Saturday I am letting you in on my home envy, this time over Artist and Illustrator Olaf Hajek‘s home in Berlin, Germany featured on The Selby. His eclectic mix of furniture, knick knacks and randomly placed treasure pieces is really unique and reminds me very much of his works which you can see here.

His chalkboard wall in his kitchen is also reflective of my latest obsession. With pinterest, tumblr and various design blogs brimming with different design DIYS (previous post), and various inspirational designs – I will confess I am cuckoo for chalkboardin’.

Women Of Style: Jaclyn Genovese

I admired Jaclyn from afar, before I actually ever really met her.  I shopped at her insanely cool store on Queen West and always dug how she made looking cool so effortless.  In my books, effortlessness is in fact the true meaning of cool and since every time I’ve happened upon Jaclyn she has looked exactly the part, she is our second woman to be featured in our Women of Style series.

Jaclyn is the owner of Jacflash, a retail store in Toronto’s ever evolving Queen West-West neighbourhood.  She works hard to seek out the hottest trends and is the ‘master-of-the-mix’ when it comes to teaming up high and low priced items for the perfect look.

Age:

I’m 26

Major stomping grounds?  (AKA where do you live)

West Queen West – TORONTO <3

How would you describe your style?

My style changes everyday depending on my mood, who I’m hanging out with or what I am doing day/night, but for the most part, I often combine the minimalism of the 90′s with one staple piece (whether its a jacket, jewelry or shoes).

What are your go-to brands and why?

UNIF and Style Stalker -they are both the perfect mix of rocker, edgy, sexy and feminine.  You will definitely get stopped on the street wearing something from both of these lines.

What are your favourite wardrobe piece(s) that you could just not live without?

A pair of leather pants (my UNIF Morrison Pants in particular) and a white blouse, much like this one.

Your favorite place to shop?

JACFLASH (1036 Queen St. West) www.jacflash.net

Is there a beauty product that you obsess over?

Cocoa Butter! Ultra Glow Solid Formula.  My girlfriends and my boyfriend have made fun of me for years for always being too “greasy”, but I am obsessed with keeping my skin soft – (but be careful wearing it with silk items, it stains!)

Can you let us in on a little beauty secret that your mother taught you?

Never go to bed without washing your face, no matter how late it is, or how racy your night was….

And lastly, what are your Spring/Summer 2012 must haves?

My Spring/Summer 2012 must haves include; anything Americana.  I recently purchased UNIF’s Easy Rider Jacket and Ping Ping & Rabbits Americana Leggings and I can’t stop wearing them (but not together, haha).  Flower Power remains this spring.  I’ve been longing for UNIF’s Flounce Dress, as well as Mink Pinks Four Seasons Panelled Dress for those charming Toronto nights, and I am still not quite over the safari print trend, as I am obsessed with UNIF’s Leopard Kimono.  In regards to shoes – the higher the better.  I am in lust with UNIF’s new Hellbounds.  Jewelry?  I am still piling it on by the pounds!  I love the new Kim & Zozi friendship style bracelets for the summer.

Tuesday Tip : Gushing over Pippa Lord’s Sous Style

I recently discovered Sous Style – Thanks to Song of Style – The site was created by Pippa Lord, who is the Photo Director at Elle Magazine. Sous Style features beautiful people preparing a meal in their homes. So basically kitchen design and home design porn! They feature daily bites, recipes, places to eat and Pippa’s daily diary. I am in love their Male Mondays, Men throwing it down in the kitchen . . Who knew.

They even have Dear Chrissy feature with Chrissy Teigen who has her own foodie friendly blog So Delushious! + if you don’t already follow her on twitter you are really missing out! – She is just as hilarious as she is gorgeous!

Hope you enjoy!!!
