When Coco first invited me to be a guest blogger on cocoandlowe.com and said it would involve attending a Scotch tasting, my initial reaction was to say “No thanks, I don’t drink scotch”. BUT when she added “It will be at ONE restaurant in Yorkville, free food and taxi chits…?” Well, how could I resist? Come on…free booze, food and cab fare? Have you ever had the ‘lobster spoons’ appetizer at ONE? I would attend any event to have even a small chance that they would be giving out lobster spoons. They are succulent bite size morsels of lobster meat swimming in melted butter, cleverly served in spoons. Mmmmmmmm. Anyway, I’m not here to talk about lobster spoons even though I love them. I’m here to tell you about my experience at the MACALLAN scotch tasting event.
I was asked to invite 2 friends to join me. I wanted to choose friends who didn’t necessarily drink scotch regularly so that we’d all be on the same level. I chose my 2 girls Sonia and Tamara.
Sonia and Tamara
We were greeted with a smile and a glass of 10 year old Macallan Scotch. Honestly, the smell of scotch reminds me of my dad. I always thought of scotch as an older man’s drink. But whatever…I drank it anyway. (on the rocks…)
We took our seats at one of the tables and there were place settings for each person with 4 glasses of scotch lined up. Yikes! Thank god there was bread and chocolate (?) on the table. I found out later that each glass had a different year scotch in it. 12, 15, 18, 21. We were told that dark chocolate and scotch are a delicious combo. So I tried it and LOVED it. You let the chocolate melt in your mouth a little, then take a swig of the scotch. It was so yummy.
A really funny man got up to the front of the room and did a power point presentation on the each of the different aged scotches and educated us on how and where each is made and the techniques that Macallan uses to make its Scotch superior to other brands. It’s pretty cool to learn about how Barley and Water turn into liquid that makes people drunk. If you want to learn more, go to www.celebratethemacallan.ca Trust me! I learned some cool things at this tasting that I can use to make conversation with men drinking scotch next time I go to a bar. Like “hey did you know that Macallan uses oak casks, handcrafted and sherry seasoned in Jerez, Spain. This delivers a scotch wonderfully rich in colour with dried fruits, spice and chocolate orange.” Hahaha… so impressive!
My friends and I had a blast! Tamara ended up winning the draw for the big bottle of 12 year Macallan. Lucky! We were sent home with a beautiful gift box. (My dad’s gonna love it)
All in all, we left with a new found appreciation for scotch. It’s no longer an “older man’s drink” to me. We actually made plans to get together and drink the bottle Tamara won. I’ll bring the chocolate.
On Wednesday, we went to support our sisters Kiki & Mimi at their spring/summer 2010 show for Brazen Hussy. The room was filled with so many beautiful people and the show was full of amazing pieces for spring! I can’t wait to strut my stuff in some of those pieces.
Brazen Hussy is about to launch their F/W collection in store and to celebrate it’s fabulousness they want to offer coco & lowe readers the chance to win a $100 gift certificate towards something from their new collection available at C.O.A.L.-803 Queen St West.
To get a chance to win this amazing prize just answer the following question in a comment:
What is your favorite piece from Brazen Hussy’s F/W collection (that I’ve selected below) and how would you rock it?
Mimi from Brazen Hussy will be picking the winner so be creative!!
Thank you to everyone who came out to help Lowe and I celebrate our bday’s! We had a blast and hope you did too! Big thanks to prettysweet for the amazingly delicious and beautiful cupcakes!!

Ok, so as I told you guys a little while ago, coco & lowe are working with The Remix Project to help them get the funding they need to stay alive. The Remix Project is a United Nations award winning National Crime Prevention Canada program that acts as an arts and cultural incubator. Remix is totally R-A-D and we don’t want to see it end….
Here is a lil info that my good friend Nana put together:
The Remix Project is a successful three-year-old program funded originally through a research and pilot grant by the National Crime Prevention Canada (NCPC). The program serves gifted but under-served and vulnerable young people across the GTA through courses fostering arts, cultural and life skills. As a result of its work, The Remix Project has helped to keep a number of young people off the streets and produced talented, newly motivated individuals. Over 110 graduates have been able to realize their creative and business potentials.
The NCPC funds research and pilot programs only, and The Remix Project’s research component has ended. As such, though the NCPC believes the program is a success and would like to see it replicated in other cities, it is no longer able to continue funding. In addition, The Remix Project is seeking a new home for September 1st, since its current location will soon be transformed into condominium developments. Gavin Sheppard, the program’s co-ordinator, feels it would be a shame to see the program go. ”We would hate to be put in a situation where we have to stop helping GTA youth, especially the ones who have gone through so much, who have had so many obstacles, so many barriers placed in their way and just need the right support and a simple push in the right direction” he said.
With a $100,000 goal, The Remix Project hopes its fundraising event will save the program. GIVE MONEY, MAKE CHANGE will be a multi-faceted event including photography and visual arts installations, performances, a silent auction and a pledge-driven dance.
So yes, we’ve put together a little (read HUGE) shin-dig which will be held June 11th @ CIRCA. We have also put together a kick ass team of party and P.R. professionals to make this night a huge success.
