beauty: fall in love with your hair all over again!

Now, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never had a weave or extensions in your life! This stuff is really interesting! With movies out like Chris Rock’s Good Hair, you really come to understand how hard it is to find beautiful luscious locks. Well look no further!

Chiggy’s salon in Yorkville has created a line of extensions called Vudz and it is something special. Primarily developed in response to the needs of their clients, Chiggy’s Touch went straight to the source-India. They found hair that is 100% human hair which is ethically sourced and traceable, not to mention it’s taken from a traditional religious ceremony called “tonsuring” where the hair is cut from the scalp as a sacrifice.

“After realizing the demand for quality, long lasting extensions, we set out to bring the absolute best,” says Patience Chodokufa, owner and hair extension expert of Chiggy’s Touch Salon and VUDZ, “This lead to the creation of VUDZ. Our hair is the highest grade on the market – 100% pure Virgin Indian Hair.  Longer, more volume, different colour – VUDZ gives the client a new take on hair.”

For all you ladies who ask me where to buy and whether to get extensions, make sure to check out their launch party next Tuesday! RSVP and you could win an amazing prizepack!!

Beauty: BLO-Blow Dry Bar Opens in Toronto!

YAY!  blo, the only blow dry bar in all of North America expands their rapidly growing empire to Toronto!!!  With 3 successful locations in Vancouver, the Toronto location on Yonge St (just north of Eglinton) is going to be insane!  Lowe and I LOVE getting blow outs, so when we heard blo was coming to Toronto we were over the moon!  What an amazing concept, no scissors, no die, just a fab hair style and you’re in and out in 30 mins for a little over $30!  I have to admit that I kind of feel bad taking up my hairdressers time getting a blow out when I know she could be cutting someone else’s hair…  They offer the perfect alternative, like they say at blo: ‘you’re not actually cheating on your hairdresser!’

The greatest part about blo are their hilarious hooks for example:

1. Cuz you can’t blo yourself

2. Just blo me

I have never been, but just going on their site has made me so excited!  The fact that they buy into the fun of being a girl and leave all the pretentious hoity-toity behind is priceless.  Plus they have a ton of other services like ‘Blo On The Go’ where they come to you and ‘Blo Bridal’ for all of you frazzled brides out there this summer!

Lowe will be checking out blo on July 10th and will give you guys a full report just in time for their grand opening on July 13th!!

Chech out their site www.blomedry.com for more info or to book an appointment online!

beauty: euro locs

Ladies!!! I have discovered the answer to having long luscious locs without having to use heat, weaving, tension, sewing, chemicals or glue and I’m really excited to share this new technology with you!!

2 words: EURO LOCS

This method of hair extensions is fairly new to North-America and is like no other long-lasting extension. After having chosen your desired hair type and length of extension, your own stands of hair are pulled through a small copper shell and crimped on extension/natural hair using a special tool. The copper shell matches the colour of your hair.

PS the pics on the internet suck! Sorry.

A full head of extensions can take between 2-4 hours (less time than bonding) and last anywhere between 3-5 months with scheduled maintenance after 8 weeks!

Caring For Your Extensions according to Toronto’s own:

~When shampooing hair, extensions should not be rubbed in a harsh manner

~Don’t brush harshly or tug at the extension, as this can loosen and damage the attachement which holds them to your scalp

~When you brush, use a brush with soft bristles and work your way up from the bottom to the top, using the brush gently

~Never go to bed with wet extensions and make sure to tie your hair back when sleeping. This will help prevent tangling and other such problems. A braid usually does the trick

~Hair extensions may be tricky to have at first, just like anything else you’re not familiar with. Give them a couple of days and you’ll naturally get familiar with them

beauty: hair & make-up tips by the pros

While at the photoshoot for Coco & Lowe’s Spring Miss ‘09 Contest winner, I made sure to ask the pros their perspective on trends and tips having to do with hair and make-up:

HAIR

Maria, who has a salon called Kasnique let us all in on certain terminology and trends to follow when describing how you want your hair cut.

Layers—

-If you’d like to ‘keep the length’ but want layers make sure to have the hair dresser only cut ‘long layers’ in the ‘middle of your head’ (aka crown)

-facial features: whether its cheek bones or a beautiful nose, make sure your stylist accentuates your fave features by directing the cuts towards them. (they’ll get it)

Colour—

-Make sure to protect your hair!!! When you put chemicals (ie hairspray, alcohol products etc) or add heat to your hair (ie blowdrying, straight iron etc) the hair swells. Just like a balloon, the more swollen it is, the better chance it will pop and it’s the same concept with hair. The more heat, the better chance it will swell and break. The objective is to bring the hair back to it’s natural state (through a treatment) before adding colour. Make sure everytime you colour your hair, you even out the ‘porosity’ before colouring. This is a term the stylist will understand.

Teasing—

Maria suggests a Comare Comb

Maria suggests a Comare Comb

Teasing isn’t the worst thing you could do to your hair but please, for me, be gentle. If you tug and pull at your hair, it’s bound to break and fall out. This comare comb is great because some of the bristles are shorter than others. Also, hair is more vulnerable when it’s wet, so make sure to brush out teased hair before getting into the shower. Brush your hair starting from the ends of your hair and finishing at the root.

Extensions—

A lot of people ask me if extensions are worth it and here’s what Maria said:

Fusion—

These look great but need a lot of maintenance. If you aren’t willing to brush your hair and dry it before bed, these aren’t for you. The cost of maintaining them is high too especially if your natural hair is curlier than the extension. Even if you have millions of dollars and a personal hair stylish on hand, the committment you make to maintaining them is necessary.

I love Britney, but she didn’t commit to maintaining her fusions…

…Or clip-ons. Not cute.

which brings me to my next topic...

Clip Ons—

Jessica Simpson and Ken Paves’ hairdo is a great example of good clip on. Maria suggests that if you dye your hair, to bring your clip-ons with you and get them to custom colour them so that they match your dye job exactly. The way to ensure they’ll stay in tact is by teasing the root of your hair a little and clipping them into the teased area. Check out hairuwear.com for more clip-on extension tips.

MAKE-UP

Great make-up artists are hard to come by and I have always been really impressed with Stephanie Flores’ work! When asked her perspective on trends and buying habits, here’s what she had to say:

Skin—

People are focussing on their skin. “This season, everyone is taking a more natural approach and are more focussed on enhancing one’s natural beauty.” says Stephanie. The fresh face look everyone is looking for starts with skin. Make sure to moisturize, rehydrate, use SPF and Drink Lots Of Water!!!

Night on the town—

Stephanie has noticed a change in women’s effort when it comes to party time!! Make-up is like a fashion accessory and can add so much to an outfit. If you want to learn a few pointers and get your make-up done at the same time, there are services that cosmetic companies offer, such as MAC, where with a purchase you are able to get your make-up done! This is a great idea if you aren’t confident with your make-up skills and want to look fab for an event or outing!! Check maccosmetics.com for more info.

If you have any questions for our fabulous pros, leave a comment and I’ll make sure to get you an answer!

beauty: mixed chicks pic

So I took the advise of our wonderful coco & lowe readers and went out and bought some Mixed Chicks hair products at Chiggy’s Touch.  When I walked in I was surprised to see my girl Kim (who I grew up with in Newmarket) working there!  She was soooooo helpful explaining exactly how to use the product and even suggesting some other products that I now swear by which I will talk about later.

The Mixed Chicks products that I bought were the deep conditioner and the leave-in conditioner.  I was advised not to buy the shampoo because I wash my hair more than once a week and the shampoo is for peeps who have seriously curly hair and don’t wash it that often (my dream, *sigh*).  Firstly, the deep conditioner smells like absolute effin HEAVEN, like I wish it was body lotion because I want it all over me.  I also loved how it left my hair, it didn’t leave a greasy residue (which I find most deep conditioners do) and I use it on my hair even if I’m going to wear it straight.  As far as the leave in conditioner goes, it’s awesome for taking out frizz, but if your hoping it will create more of a curl to your lack luster waves (like mine) think again.  What it did for me was it separated my waves to give it a little more of a ‘beachy’ look. I think this product would be killer for women and men who have really curly hair, but mine is so in between so it needs a little more than just product application….  It also takes my hair about 81 days to dry so the fact that you have to air dry or towel dry with a micro-fiber towel is kinda inconvenient.

Just to give you guys a better idea (and to totally embarrass myself) here’s a pic of what my hair looks like with no product and no heat (by heat I mean using a curling iron to define curls or flat iron to straighten) and my face with no make up… ughhh LOL

sorry if I frightened you… LOL

So as you can see my hair in its natural state is not much unlike a hay stack or as my brother lovingly refers to it when its a bit damp ’seaweed’. LOL!

I didn't dye my hair, just different lighting...

This is what it looked like after ‘Mixed Chicks’.  So YAY!  It really gets rid of frizz and adds some shine, but I get this effect from most moose products….  I think after watching the testimonials I was expecting CRAZZZY results so anything short of a Foxy Brown afro would appear dismal…

So in conclusion, if you have really curly hair Mixed Chicks is for you!  And no, you don’t have to be half black and half white to use it.  Almost everyone I know has a little bit of some other race somewhere in their family tree, so again, if you have curly hair (whatever your race) give it a whirl! Oh and you gotta try the Deep Conditioner!! Sooo good!

Thanks for the tips on where to buy Mixed Chicks ladies!

Have any of you tried it?

xoxo,

Coco
