I went home after a lovely dinner with Lowe and Winy on Friday night to a lonely home (the man was out of town) and was instantly comforted when I turned on my TV and saw that I had over a week’s worth of Oprah shows to catch up on. Â I snuggled up on the couch and even revelled in the otherwise annoying ‘celebrity Oprah praise fests’ that now take up the last 3 or 4 minutes of the show. Â I found myself even tearing weeping at points that weren’t even that sad, whimpering ‘I love you too Oprah’. Â Maybe it was the three glasses of Cava at dinner that got me a little emotional, but most likely, it was the mourning of the imminent death of more than just a show, but a connection with a stranger that in many times of my life I’ve considered a hero.
Even my more cynical friends have gotten a little sentimental about this departure, all of us wondering who or what could ever replace such a force? Â Not only has she been a champion for so many social issues, she has made things that are so important to me -like reading and giving back- for a lack of better words, cool. Â What she has done for not only women of colour in television, but for women in general could be a thesis topic all on it’s own and love her delivery and show or not, there is something to be said about how far she has come and how much change she has affected. Â With the last show to air this afternoon, I can’t help to wonder what will become of my PVR, or more importantly to most people – 4pm. Â I understand she has to live her life but seriously,
WHAT WILL THE WORLD DO WITH OUT OPRAH!!??!?
Yes, she has her own network, but I have yet to be floored by any of the shows. Â The fact is, I love her. Â Not The Judds, not Dr. Oz, not Dr. Phil and so help me Jesus, definitely not Suze! Â I grew up with Ops (as we call her in my house). Â School was done at 3:30 and my bus dropped me off at the exact perfect time of 3:52, giving me just enough time to grab a snack and tune in. Â Because there wasn’t much else on at that time slot, it was the one hour that I got uninterrupted access to the TV and didn’t have to make any life threatening promises to my brother in order to watch it without distraction. Â Since graduating University and moving on with my life, I stopped watching a lot of TV, but the Oprah show is one that I have never turned my back on. Â The perfect blend of current events, world issues and silly fun stuff like celebrity and FAVORITE THINGS!!!
Oprah episodes have been the topic of dinner discussions, a reminder of my family home when I’m lonely and a time and a place to have a ‘good cry’ when I needed it most.
To a woman who has been through so much, to have accomplished more than most, thank you Oprah! Â You have made me believe in magic, hope and furthered my faith in the human spirit. Â I have learned so much from you and man do I hope that there is some kind of reincarnation of your show in the near future. Â Like September near future….. Â You can have the summer off, but that’s IT!
