Incarcerated sex offenders have a rough time in prison. At the higher security levels (e.g., high and medium security federal prisons), they tend to be harassed, attacked, and brutalized. This is part of an institutional culture if not supported by the prison administration, then accepted by it as inevitable.
Considering this, do sex offenders get treatment in prison?
Approximately half of the sample (52.7%, n = 365) had received a specific treatment for sex offenders during their imprisonment, whereas 47.3% (n = 328) were in regular prisons and may have only received nonspecific interventions such as drug counseling.
Keeping this in consideration, what type of prisons do sex offenders go to? The Bowden Institution is the only prison in Alberta that offers a high-intensity sex offender program. The program begins with a six-week primer program and then consists of 117 classroom sessions over about four and a half months.
